Physical Exercise will help to
Reduce fatigue
Maintain muscle mass
Improve anemia
Improve mental health by reducing stress, anxiety, and depression
Reduce the risk of cardiovascular disease by lowering cholesterol levels
Just 30 minutes of physical activity per day is enough to help mitigate some of the side effects of hemodialysis.
Even when practicing physical activity, dietary restrictions must be maintained, i.e., you must continue to eat a diet low in potassium, phosphorus, sodium (salt), and fluids. Potassium levels must be monitored even more closely, as physical activity can increase levels of this mineral in the first few hours after exercise. Physical exercise increases sweat production and consequently increases sodium loss. This can lead to better blood pressure control and a greater reduction in thirst, which may be related to reduced weight gain between dialysis sessions.
With regard to fluid intake, restrictions should also be maintained to prevent significant weight gain between dialysis sessions, which can lead to shortness of breath, fatigue, and cardiac overload. It is important to take into account certain characteristics of physical activity, namely duration, intensity, and ambient temperature, so as not to increase thirst.
Regular physical activity in patients undergoing hemodialysis has a positive effect on their nutritional status and sense of well-being, significantly improving their quality of life.
If you are thinking about starting a physical activity, consult your doctor.
